DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The City of Alton Public Works Department is dedicated to providing and maintaining a safe and cost-effective roadway system, public services, and all related structures and facilities as assigned by the City Council and State Law. The Department strives to contribute to the health, safety, and well-being of the residents, visitors, and community at large.

The Alton Public Works Department consists of the City Engineer/Public Works Director’s Office, Street Department, Sewer Maintenance, Sewer Treatment Plant, Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance (City Garage), Park Maintenance, Animal Control, Nuisance Abatement, and PACUP. The Department is also responsible for the Forestry Division, which maintains Alton’s street trees and other dead and dangerous trees on City property and right of way. Please click on the previously listed division to obtain more information about that division. Pet licenses may be purchased in the City Treasurer’s Office.

The Street Department is responsible for all roadways pavement, sidewalks, signage, and stormwater drainage. Sewer Maintenance is in control of maintaining and operating of all City sanitary and storm sewers located within the public right-of-way/easements. The Sewer Treatment Facility is responsible for processing the sanitary and combined sewer collection system.

It is with the cooperation of each of the sectors of the Alton Public Works Department that improvements are made. All of these improvements benefit the residents, visitors, and the entire community. The Department is committed to further enhance and safeguard our roads, storm/sewer system, and other facilities.
