Description of the Public Works Department

The City of Alton Public Works Department is dedicated to providing and maintaining a safe and cost-effective roadway system, public services, and all related structures and facilities as assigned by the City Council and State Law.  The Department strives to contribute to the health, safety, and well-being of the residents, visitors, and community at large.

The Public Works Department consists of the City Engineer/Public Works Director's Office, Street Department, Sewer Maintenance, Sewer Treatment Plant, Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance (City Garage), Park Maintenance, Animal Control, Nuisance Abatement, and PACUP.  The Department is also responsible for the Forestry Division, which maintains Alton's street trees and other dead and dangerous trees on City property and right of way. Please click on the previously listed division to obtain more information about that division.  Pet licenses may be purchased in the City Treasurer's Office.

The Street Department is responsible for all roadways pavement, sidewalks, signage, and stormwater drainage.  Sewer Maintenance is in control of maintaining and operation of all City sanitary and stormsewers located within the public right-of-way/easements.  The Sewer Treatment Facility is responsible for processing of the sanitary and combined sewer collection system.

It is with the cooperation of each of the sectors of the Public Works Department that improvements are made.  All of these improvements benefit the residents, visitors, and the entire community. The Department is committed to further enhance and safe guard our roads, storm/sewer system and other facilities.

Leaf Burning Information

The burning of leaves is permitted on WEDNESDAYS and SATURDAYS during the months of OCTOBER,NOVEMBERDECEMBER, and from APRIL 15 through MAY 30 from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M.  The burning of anything other than leaves, plants, or shrubs is a violation of City ordinance.  It is illegal to burn trash, garbage, or other disposables at any time. The Police Department tickets violators.  Burning leaves on the street damages the asphalt.  Leaf burning must be done in a container.

In the Fall, the City provides a leaf vacuum service for leaves raked to the edge of the yard.  Leaves should NOT be raked into the street or on the curb as this causes clogging issues within the City's drainage system. Leaves raked into the street or on the curb are a violation of City ordinance.
