The Alton Police Department


The Alton Police Department is a formal organization within the City of Alton whose primary functions and goals include the protection of life and property, to ensure peace and order within the community, the prevention of crime, the impartial enforcement of all federal, state and local laws, and the investigation of crimes in an attempt to solve them and apprehend the criminals responsible for committing them. 

Our mission and purpose is to work in partnership with the law abiding citizens of our community to provide a professional, progressive, and community-oriented police service to our people. We will enforce the law, protect constitutional rights and serve the people with courtesy and concern for their needs with emphasis on integrity and fairness.

May 10-16, 2020-National Police Week

What is National Police Week?

National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

This year the police department will not have an in-person ceremony due to the Corona Virus.  However, we are still celebrating within and appreciate you keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

April 8, 2020-NotifyAlton

The City of Alton's newest tool, NotifyAlton, is aimed at providing residents with non-emergency information.  NotifyAlton supplies residents with text messages for Traffic Impacts, Street Closures, Leaf Removal, etc.  The City of Alton urges residents to subscribe to receive alerts sent directly to mobile phones.

Leaf Burning Information

The burning of leaves is permitted on WEDNESDAYS 
and SATURDAYS during the months of 
OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER, and from APRIL 15 through MAY 30 
from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M.  The burning of anything other than leaves, plants, or shrubs is a violation of City ordinance.  It is illegal to burn trash, garbage, or other disposables at any time. The Police Department tickets violators.  Burning leaves on the street damages the asphalt.  Leaf burning must be done in a container.   

In the Fall, the City provides a leaf vacuum service for leaves raked to the edge of the yard.  Leaves should NOT be raked into the street or on the curb as this causes clogging issues within the City's drainage system. Leaves raked into the street or on the curb are a violation of City ordinance. 

TORNADO SIRENS

The City of Alton doesn't have any tornado sirens and people that live or work in Alton are encouraged to register with CodeRed.

DOWNED POWER LINES 

Downed power lines can be energized and very DANGEROUS!  Call 1.800.552.7583 and report the location of the downed power lines.

CHILD CAR SEATS

The Alton Police Department does not currently have any certified car seat installers.  The Alton Fire Department has a limited number of certified car seat installers.  Please call the Alton Fire Department secretary to find out when the next installer is on duty.

DOG AND CAT REGULATIONS

Alton Animal Control is staffed with one Animal Control Officer. You can call Animal Control at 618.463.3553 for other redemption arrangements, animal control complaints, and to report any animal situations.  Please contact the Alton Police Department at 618.463.3505 for animal emergencies on nights and weekends.

  • Alton does have and enforces a leash law
  • The owner of any dog not under restraint shall be in the violation of the City Code. 
  • Alton has a law requiring pet owners to clean up after their pets. Failure to do so could result in a fine.
  • Pets cannot cause a nuisance for neighbors.
